Historic Gettysburg storefronts and a lit Christmas tree reflected on wet December pavement at night

Weekend Plan

The Perfect Christmas Weekend in Gettysburg, PA

A Friday-to-Sunday plan built for how a winter weekend here actually works — short days, early dinners and a warm place to come back to.

This plan assumes you are staying overnight — the difference between a Christmas day trip and a Christmas weekend is entirely in the evening and the morning after.

Seasonal events run on specific dates rather than every weekend, so use the plan as a shape and drop the festival programming in where it fits. Always confirm the exact dates with the organizer before you book travel.

Day 1

Friday

Arrival, downtown and a long dinner

Arrive while there is still light, settle in, and use the evening for the historic district rather than a major attraction.

3:00pm

Check in and drop the bags

Arriving before dark means you are not hunting for parking in the evening. Ask the innkeeper what is on that weekend — local advice beats any list.

4:15pm

Blue-hour walk in the historic district

Head to Lincoln Square, then walk south down Baltimore Street toward Steinwehr Avenue. December's early sunset is an advantage: the windows are lit while the sky still holds colour.

6:00pm

Dinner by the fire

Book a table in advance for weekend evenings. A tavern or a candlelit dining room, a slow meal, and an early night — you have a full day tomorrow.

Day 2

Saturday

Events, history and seasonal shopping

Saturday is the busy day. Pick one organised event or attraction as the anchor, then let the rest of the day flow around it.

8:30am

Breakfast, unhurried

If you are staying at an inn, breakfast is part of the experience. Eat properly — it is a long day and lunch may be late.

10:00am

The day's anchor event or historic site

During the festival weekend this is the centre of the action: markets, gingerbread displays, historic house tours and performances. Otherwise, choose a museum or a guided tour.

1:00pm

Christmas shopping on foot

Baltimore Street and Steinwehr Avenue carry the independent shops, antique dealers and local makers. Buy the gifts now, not on Sunday morning.

3:30pm

Lights and photographs

Golden hour into blue hour is the best light of the day. Walk the lit blocks again — it looks different with the sun going down.

6:30pm

Seasonal dinner

Reserve ahead; Saturday of the festival weekend is the hardest table of the season. Then back to the fire.

Day 3

Sunday

Slow morning and an easy departure

Leave the last day deliberately light. The point is to go home rested, not to tick off one more thing.

8:30am

Breakfast and a slow start

No alarm, no itinerary. This is the morning that makes the weekend feel longer than it was.

10:00am

One last stop

A quiet walk on the battlefield edges, a final museum room, or the shop you promised yourself you would return to.

12:00pm

Lunch, then home

Eat before you leave town rather than on the road, and check out with time to spare.

Baladerry Inn at dusk in the snow, wreaths on every lit window, suggested home base for a Christmas weekend

Suggested Home Base

Stay at Baladerry Inn

A historic countryside inn outside town, close enough that the lights and dinner are an easy drive, and far enough that the evening is genuinely quiet. Guest rooms with character, a cooked breakfast, and a cedar sauna, hot tub and fire pit to come back to after a cold afternoon.

Make It Yours

Two variations on the same weekend

The shape stays the same. What changes is the pace.

For couples

  • Swap Saturday's second shopping block for a long lunch and a historic tour.
  • Take the sauna or hot tub at the end of the day instead of a second outing.
  • Book a later dinner sitting and walk the lights first.
  • Consider Sunday to Thursday instead — quieter, and often better value.

For families

  • Anchor Saturday morning on the family-friendly festival programming and markets.
  • Keep the afternoon short and indoors — December afternoons are cold and short.
  • Choose lodging with space to spread out and somewhere warm to return to.
  • Do the lights early in the evening, then eat before anyone gets overtired.
